A committee of Ames High students, parents and faculty has been formed to begin preliminary discussions on the possibility of closing lunch for all students next year . Reasons cited for this action include an attempt to "potentially help offset the food service budget deficit," according to the committee’s charge. The committee hopes to adequately address issues surrounding the closing of lunch including the possibility of increasing the number of lunch periods from two to three, a potential increase in the length of 5th period and the possible "need to increase lunchroom supervision staff." They are also considering how the "concept of progressive freedom/responsibility" that the current open lunch system allows for would be affected or eliminated if lunch was closed.
