Kardashian scandal affects students

Many students at Ames High have enjoyed watching the popular reality television show Keeping up with the Kardashians throughout the years . “I love [ Keeping up with the Kardashians ],” senior Sophia Smarandescu said. “If someone drove 100 kilometres in any direction they’d hit Kim’s booty. She and I can relate.” The show focuses on the hectic lives of this large and wealthy family. The Armenian-American Kardashian family gained riches and fame from the O.J. Simpson trial in which the father had won the long and controversial trial for the murder of O.J.’s wife. The father then passed away, and Kris (the family’s mother) remarried to Bruce Jenner, a former Olympic athlete. The four Kardashian children (Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, and Rob) now had a new step-father, new step-siblings, as well as two half-sisters. Kim Kardashian, a Hollywood socialite and a long-time friend of Paris Hilton, was involved in a sex-tape scandal in early 2007. This gained the celebrilite new fame, as well as the family getting attention through the first airing of Keeping up with the Kardashians on the E! television network in October 2007. As if her life needed more scandal and controversy, the recent marriage and also recent divorce of Kim Kardashian and her husband and New Jersey Nets basketball player, Kris Humphries, is currently circulating the mass media and is the highlight of Hollywood gossip. “The little girl I babysat stabbed her pillow pet with a butterknife after she found out,” Smarandescu said. Kardashian and Humphries began seeing each other in October 2010. They were engaged by May 2011, and were happily wed on August 20, 2011. The wedding was extravagant, with rumors flying around that Kardashian was actually paid millions of dollars to have this wedding. Just over 2 months following their wedding on October 31, 2011, Kardashian filed for divorce. She then is forcing Humphries into providing for his own court expenses. “She’s either a fraud or an amazing business woman, judging buy the amount of money she got from that wedding,” sophomore Carla Beghin said. Many media sources are accusing Kardashian and Humphries’ marriage and divorce as a publicity stunt – it was a way for them to earn extra cash. “I watched her interview on E!,” Smarandescu said. “She was lost and barfing out words.” Smarandescu added with that statement, “Lawl.” Although the concept of a publicity stunt is not new to Hollywood, what effect does the divorce of Kardashian and Humphrey do to the institution of marriage in America? “Everyone gets divorced,” Smarandescu said. “I think celebs just get more grief for it because they’re in the public eye.” “There are some celebrities that I’m sure don’t get married specifically for the publicity,” Beghin said. “ But by large I’d say that relationships between celebrities is mostly for the sake of giving people something to talk about.
